The Importance of Defining Your North Star

purpose Sep 08, 2022

Your North Star is your guidepost. It's what you use to keep yourself moving in the right direction, no matter what life throws your way. Without one, it's all too easy to get caught up in the day-to-day and lose sight of what's truly important to you.

Defining your North Star isn't always easy, but it's worth taking the time to really think about what you want out of life. What are your deepest desires? What kind of person do you want to be? Once you have a good sense of what you're striving for, you can start to figure out how to get there.

What is a North Star?

In navigation, the North Star is a tool that has been used by sailors and travelers since at least the 2nd century. The North Star actually consists of two stars that orbit each other and is also known as Polaris (Polaris A and Polaris B). There are a few things that make the North Star such an ideal useful navigational tool:

  • It is located very close to the North Celestial Pole, making it an excellent marker for finding north.
  • It is one of the brightest stars in the sky, making it easy to spot.
  • It is relatively stationary in the sky, meaning that it can be used as a reliable point of reference when trying to find your way.

The North Star has been used by many different cultures throughout history, and it remains an important tool for navigation today.

Similarly, in life, a North Star is a guiding light that helps individuals or organizations stay on track and achieve their goals.  In business, it acts as a strategic planning tool and measurement of the one guiding goal a company wants to achieve. It gives you a point of reference, a "True North", to measure all other progress against.

Having a North Star is a way to cut through the noise and determine whether what you're doing is getting you closer to or further away from your goal. It should be something that inspires you and motivates you to keep going, even when things get tough. It should be something that you can reference when making decisions to ensure that you're staying true to your goal.

For example, if your goal is to build a successful business, your North Star could be creating a positive impact in the lives of your customers. If your goal is to get healthy and fit, your North Star could be improving your food choices and exercising a few minutes each day. Defining your North Star is the first step in creating a life that feels purposeful and fulfilling. Without one, it can be easy to lose sight of what you're trying to achieve and veer off course.

How can you find your North Star?

Having a defined North Star will help you stay focused and on track and will guide you to your ultimate destination, so you need to be clear about what it is before you can set a course for it.

There are a few ways to go about finding your North Star. One way is to sit down and brainstorm what it is that you really want in life. What are your goals? What would make you happy? Once you have a good idea of what you want, you can start setting goals and taking steps towards achieving them.

Another way to find your North Star is to look at successful people who have already achieved what you want. Study their lives and see what they did to get where they are. What steps did they take? What mindset did they have? By modeling their success, you can increase your chances of achieving your own goals.

How can you use your North Star to achieve success?

When it comes to using your North Star to achieve success, there are a few key things to keep in mind. First and foremost, it’s important to have a clear and concise definition of what success looks like for you. Without this, it will be difficult to measure progress and know when you’ve reached your goal. If your personal definition of what success changes, it may be necessary to redefine your North Star.

In addition, it’s important to keep your North Star in mind throughout the entire journey, not just when things are going well. There will be challenges and setbacks along the way, but if you keep your eye on the prize, you’ll be more likely to persevere and ultimately achieve success.

Finally, remember that your North Star is unique to you. What works for someone else may not work for you, so don’t get discouraged if things don’t go according to plan. It doesn't have to be fixed in stone. As you grow and change over time, so too can your North Star.

When it comes to business and life, it’s important to have a North Star—something to guide you in the right direction. Without a North Star, it’s all too easy to get caught up in the day-to-day and lose sight of what’s important.

Defining your North Star is an important first step in achieving success in business and life. Once you have your North Star, use it as a guide to help you make decisions, big and small. For anyone looking to find their way, whether on a journey or in life, the North Star can be a helpful guide.
