How to Build New Instincts: The Power of Intentional Reps

Dec 30, 2023

Instincts, abilities, and skills - many people see these as innate traits that determine our success. But what if I told you they aren't something we're born with? They're skills we can adopt and develop. Let me explain.

When I started my NFL journey as a rookie, people often overlooked the fact that I was learning to play a completely new position. I had never done many of the things I was asked to do before, at any level. So there I was, thrown into a position where I had to learn on the fly while competing at the highest level.

With no prior experience, every pass route I ran was an exploration, and every defensive coverage I faced was a unique challenge. It felt like a daunting task, especially when going up against veteran players who seemed to effortlessly master the game due to their extensive experience. But it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows for them either - they had to unlearn their old habits to fit into the unfamiliar context we were operating within.

During this demanding period, I learned that instincts aren't just innate. They're a byproduct of the environment and can be deliberately developed over time. Our instincts are developed in the moment, in the context they are used. And that's what makes them a powerful tool we can harness and refine for success. So, what's the key to building these instincts? Intentional repetitions.

Here's how you can start building your own instincts, no matter the situation:

  1. Detail your preparation: Before jumping into the field, make sure to learn as much as you can about your environment. It's like mapping out a battlefield before diving into the fight. This will help you manage your expectations and make you more comfortable dealing with whatever outcome your attempts yield. Knowledge isn't just power - it's confidence.
  2. Choose 'live reps': While simulations are great for practice, 'live reps' - the real, in-the-moment practice - take learning to a whole new level. They demand more focus, intentionality, and discipline, but they also give you an accurate measure of your progress. Each live rep is a win or a valuable lesson that shortens the learning curve.
  3. Master the fundamentals: Repeated practice will make you comfortable doing the challenging things that once seemed too hard. By mastering the fundamentals through continuous repetition, you not only gain confidence but also unlock a new level of creative thought, allowing you to tweak and personalize these essential aspects.

Instincts aren't just a blessing you're born with; intuition isn't a static trait. It's something you build brick by brick, repetition by repetition, honing your senses and sharpening your perception. The more you practice, the better you become at deciphering the subtle cues and signals that guide you. With every deliberate effort, you not only evolve your instincts but also enhance your capabilities, unlocking new levels of potential for success. Embrace the journey of continuous growth and trust in the power of your intuition to lead you towards greatness.

So, next time you step into the arena, the office, or wherever you need to compete, remember the power of intentional repetitions. Detail your preparation, embrace live reps, and master the fundamentals. Your instincts will evolve, and alongside them, your skills will flourish, opening new doors of success.

Remember, the secret to building success isn't in your mental inheritance; it's hidden in your repetitions. Seize each one and watch as you transform into a more confident, successful version of yourself.
